Do You Have Questions about Guardianship and Supported Decision Making?
In Canada for most families when children with intellectual disabilities are under 18, families have full say over their child's information and access to programs and services. Once the child turns 18 in most cases the individual automatically becomes their own guardian by default. At that point, parents may be denied information on their child's participation in school, medical offices, or government services unless other arrangements are made.
